Description
Braunwald - Gumen, located in the Glarus region of Switzerland, is a popular paragliding site known for its beautiful scenery and cross-country flying potential. The site is accessible via the new Gumenbahn, which has been operational since December 2007. From the Gumen restaurant, it's about a 30-minute walk to the launch site. Be cautious of avalanche risks during snowy conditions and always check with the Gumen restaurant for the latest avalanche information.
Never fly during Föhn winds due to the high risk of avalanches at Gumen. There are also cables southwest of Linthal to Nussbüel that you need to be aware of. Landing is in a designated grassy area with a windsock. After landing, pack up your glider immediately and leave the field.
The launch site at Gumengrat is situated at an altitude of 2040 meters and is a medium-difficulty site. The launch area is a moderately steep meadow. Be cautious of strong rotor winds from the north to northeast, which can create significant wind shear just a few meters above the launch slope. The new Gumenbahn makes the launch site accessible with a 20-minute walk.
Flights typically start towards the south from Gumengrat. Thermals can be found to the left on Seblengrat or to the right south of Eggstöcke. Once you gain altitude over Eggstöcke, you can fly north over Oberblegisee and Leuggelstock towards Glarus, or south towards Linthal and Klausenpass for cross-country routes.
Be aware of numerous cables in the Urnerboden area and a nearly invisible cable from Linthal to the upper edge of the cliff above Linthal on the Braunwald valley side.
The site is suitable for year-round flying and is easily accessible in winter, even with skis. During the off-season, you may need to walk to Gumen. The new Gumenbahn takes you to the mountain restaurant, with the launch site at Gumengrat.
Soaring conditions are excellent with winds from the southwest to southeast. For cross-country flights towards Glarus or Klausenpass, conditions are generally favorable. You can also enjoy dynamic lift in the valley wind above Schwanden.
