Montoz, Switzerland Montoz offers a unique paragliding experience with both thermal and dynamic flying conditions, especially in the afternoon. Small cross-country flights are easily achievable here. The northern launch site is spacious and relatively easy to start from, but be cautious of turbulence if there's a westward wind. After takeoff, you'll need to navigate around or over individual trees before reaching a steep drop about 200 meters below, which forms an ideal ridge for soaring. The landing zone is located above Tavannes, just before the forest along the road to Grimm. It's large and well-marked with a windsock. Parking is available at the Restaurant Werdtberg, from where it's about a 5-minute walk to the launch site. Montoz also features a southern launch site towards La Heutte, known for generating strong thermals, making it a popular starting point for distance flights in south to southwest winds. The northern site is well-regarded for its reliable thermals later in the day and is frequently used by paragliding schools. Access to the site is best via Reconvilier, with a paved road leading up to the Werdtberg restaurant. From there, it's a short, flat walk to the launch site. The route via Tavannes is less recommended due to rough road conditions. There are two official landing zones: one above Tavannes, ideal if you plan to hike back up, and another near the former military area of Reconvilier, which is convenient for hitchhiking back.
