Meon Shore is a paragliding site characterized by a series of low cliffs that work well with an on-shore breeze. This site is known for its sensitivity and requires experienced pilots with good launch and landing techniques. The site falls within the controlled airspace of Solent Airport (Daedalus), and permission from Solent Airport ATC must be obtained prior to flying. The site is strictly for members of the Sky Surfing Club, with no reciprocal agreements in place. The cliffs at Meon Shore offer a fun flying experience for local club members, but pilots must be considerate of other beach users. The land ownership is unclear, but Fareham Council tolerates the activity as long as there is no impact. Pilots are personally responsible for their actions and must handle any incidents themselves. The site is located to the west of Hill Head Harbour, with parking available on Cliff Road near the toilets. From there, walk west along the beach past the chalets to reach the low cliffs where takeoff occurs. The cliffs are only about 40 feet high, and takeoff is typically from the beach below them. Before flying, pilots must call Solent Airport Control Tower 15 minutes prior to takeoff and again when flying is finished for the day. The airspace extends from the surface up to 2000 feet. Normal operating hours for the airport are 0900-1800 in summer and 0900-1630 in winter. Outside these hours, no notification is needed. Takeoff should be done in the presence of a competent pilot familiar with the site. The beach is narrow, so flying is usually only possible during low tide. Pilots should check tide tables to ensure there is enough beach for landing. Wind strength should be checked at the top of the cliff, as it can be deceptively low on the beach. White-horses on the sea indicate winds too strong for standard paragliders. To take off, inflate your wing on the beach away from the cliff, then move slowly backward towards the cliff until you feel lift. Crab sideways in the upwind direction and slowly towards the cliff. If the wind is low, running may be necessary to get airborne. Once airborne, fly along the cliff and gradually move away from it as you gain altitude to avoid being sucked into or over the cliff. Landing should be done with caution, especially in strong winds due to the venturi effect. Ensure the tide is out enough to provide a safe landing space. Landing is usually at the edge of the cliffs as they start to drop. Keep well in front of the cliffs to leave the lift band and avoid the venturi effect. Hazards include high tides that can reach the cliffs, busy beaches with walkers and families, and rubbish or sharp stones that can damage lines and canopies. The beach is also a popular nudist area. Pilots should be aware of the Southampton airspace to the west, which is off-limits. While it is possible to fly towards the caravan park, this airspace must be taken into consideration.
