San Giuliano Terme, located in the Pisa region of Italy, offers a unique paragliding experience. The main takeoff point is situated at an elevation of 210 meters above sea level, just above the town of San Giuliano Terme. Despite the relatively low altitude difference between takeoff and landing (200 meters), the local aerology often allows for excellent thermal and dynamic flights, with significant altitude gains. The site is primarily used for soaring, but cross-country flights are possible, though challenging due to the flatland sections. Top landing is feasible but requires skill and caution. Access to the takeoff is facilitated by a club shuttle service (navetta). The recommended meeting points are the bar 'Il Conte' in Orzignano, a district of San Giuliano Terme, or the Parapendio Versilia and Monti Pisani association at Via 20 Settembre 36 in San Giuliano Terme. The landing area is difficult to reach on foot as it is located behind the railway. It is advisable to be accompanied by a local pilot. The official landing field is a large, flat dirt area in front of the takeoff, just beyond the railway and between the railway and the high-voltage power line. This landing area is suitable for all skill levels, but caution is needed during periods when the field is cultivated. The terrain at the takeoff is rocky, with protective mats only where the wing is laid out. The wind conditions are typically 10-15 km/h, sometimes reaching 20 km/h. It is crucial to have good control over the wing during inflation to avoid being dragged due to the rocky ground. The site is particularly dangerous with winds from the northwest and north, as a violent rotor can form due to the hill extending perpendicularly to the takeoff. Always ensure the wind is frontal by checking the windsocks or observing smoke in the plains. The optimal wind direction for takeoff is from the south to the west. The region also offers cultural attractions, such as the historic thermal baths in San Giuliano Terme, providing a pleasant stay for non-flying companions.
