This site, with an elevation of 222 meters, is occasionally used for soaring and some cross-country (XC) flying. It is a members-only site and is available for flying midweek only. For more information, visit: [Avon Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club](http://www.avonhgpg.co.uk/sites/sites.php) Coordinates: - Grid Reference: ST 803 354 - Latitude: 51.117545 - Longitude: -2.282830 Site Details: - Site Code: 2.037 - Wind Direction: WNW, NW, NNW - Height Above Sea Level: 755 feet - Height Top to Bottom: 185 feet - Site Officer: Nicholas Somerville (07891 921651) - Rating: Pilot and Advanced Pilot Rated only - Permission: Midweek only. No weekend flying due to model flyers. Pilots must have a current Avon helmet sticker and a National Trust Helmet Sticker for XC flights. Parking: There are a few parking spaces at the top of the hill and more available after the right turn along the top. Do not block any gates. Access the site through the kissing gate adjacent to the field gate at the top of the hill and secure the rope on the gate. Rigging: Paragliders can lay out in front of the hill fort ramp or at the far end where the ramp peters out. Hang gliders can be dropped off at the kissing gate before parking further along the track. Rigging should be done on the other side of the kissing gate. Take Off: Take off anywhere along the ridge. The far end is best when the wind is WNW. Coordinate with model flyers to establish a shared airspace agreement before taking off. Local Flying: If the wind direction is to the left of Alfred's Tower, it is better to fly the Spencer's Bowl (SW bowl). This is a new site, so treat it with respect and share your flying experience with other pilots and the club committee. XC Flying: Be aware of gliders flying from the Kingston Deverill Glider Field behind the ridge to the SE. After that, there is no significant airspace downwind until you reach the Solent block. Flights of 65km+ to Swanage are possible. Top Landing: The top landing area is large and free of obstructions. Bottom Landing: There is no agreed bottom landing. The ridge is steep, but slope-side landing should be manageable for paragliders if the decision is made early. Avoid getting too low due to the abundance of bushes and small trees. Directions: Leave Frome heading south on the B3092. Two miles after Maiden Bradley, turn left immediately after the Red Lion pub into Long Lane. Follow the track carefully for about 1 mile. There are a few parking spaces at the top of the hill and more available after the right turn along the top. Do not block any gates.
