The Krahberg/Venet is one of the best thermal mountains in the region and an ideal starting point for cross-country flights in the Tyrolean Oberland. The main launch site is frequently used and offers excellent XC opportunities. This is a year-round flying area (when the cable car is operational), with the best conditions from May to mid-August. Thermals dominate this area, providing consistent updrafts that can also be turbulent. Valley Wind: During the summer months, the Inntal wind significantly affects the flying area. By midday, it can prevent launches from the south launch site. Caution is advised on the western edge due to lee turbulence. In the late afternoon, the northeast launch site offers soaring opportunities and helps pilots enter thermals. At the landing site, the strength of the valley wind should be considered, and pilots should plan their landing approach early to avoid drifting over the Inn River. Cross-Country Flight Opportunities: - Down the Inntal along the Lechtal Alps, Mieminger Chain, Nordkette. - Up the Inntal into the Engadin or over the Reschen Pass towards Vintschgau. - Along the Stanzertal and Paznaun Valley towards Vorarlberg. - Along the Ötztal to the southern side of the Alps. Flying in the Venet area is only permitted with a valid flight license, approved equipment, valid insurance, and a valid start and landing card. Pilots unfamiliar with the area should inform themselves about the location and size of the landing site before their first flight. Launch Sites: At Venet, you can launch in any wind direction. Be cautious of lee turbulence on the western descending ridge. In strong winds, updrafts at the north launch site can be misleading due to rotor effects. Only launch if you are absolutely sure. The descent with the Venet cable car is free for pilots. Flying is at your own risk. Radio Frequency for Venet Pilots: PMR 5.29 The thermals here are dominant and consistent but can be turbulent, making it a challenging site. The Venet is often the starting point for extensive routes, including destinations like the Engadin, Ötztal, and Vorarlberg. In summer, the valley wind is usually strong. Be cautious of Föhn winds.
