High and Over is a paragliding site located in the UK, known for its small, steep, tree-covered bowl facing due east over the Cuckmere river valley. This site is regularly used for soaring and cross-country (XC) flights, with various takeoff options available. It is essential to contact the club before flying and follow the site rules. Region: UK Site Record: 80.1 km (details at [SHGC](https://www.shgc.org.uk)) Takeoff: There are two takeoff areas at High and Over. From the car park, follow the left path for the southeast-facing launch or the right path for the east-facing launch. The southeast-facing launch has a stock fence with a four-span opening. Instructions for opening and closing the fence are detailed in the site guide. The right takeoff is the first sloping terrace below the stile, requiring careful ground handling due to a steep wind gradient. Landing: Top landing for the left-hand launch is immediately behind takeoff, requiring a careful approach to avoid overflying the road and dealing with rotor or steep wind gradients. For the right-hand launch, the top landing area is also immediately behind takeoff, with additional hazards like fences, trees, and spectators. The bottom landing area is in the field below the takeoff slopes, with no access for retrieves, requiring a walk back up. Hazards: The bowl is almost entirely tree-covered, with large trees, fences, and the river posing obstacles. The river can be over 10 ft deep when the tide is in, and the bottom landing area can be turbulent, especially in sea-breeze conditions. During winter, the field often floods. Airflow: High and Over works best with wind coming up the valley. The site can become thermic and turbulent quickly, with local sea breeze effects, wave, and convergence. Fast changes in wind direction and strength are common, producing gusty thermals. Always get a full site briefing before flying. Rigging: Both canopies and gliders should be rigged to the rear of the takeoff areas, ensuring public footpaths are not blocked. Directions: High and Over is situated in the Cuckmere valley south of Alfriston, between Lewes and Eastbourne, and just northeast of Seaford. The best route by road is from Seaford on the A259, then heading north on the B2108. Drive carefully through Alfriston village due to narrow streets and tourists. From the car park, follow the left path to the southeast takeoff or the right path to the east takeoff. Car Parking: The public car park is two miles from Seaford and one mile south from Alfriston on the B2108. A lay-by opposite can also be used. The area gets busy, so park considerately.
