Bell Hill is a popular paragliding site in the UK, known for its dynamic lift and thermic conditions. The site is managed by the Wessex HGPGC Ltd and is located at OS Grid Ref: ST 797 086 (Map 194), GPS: N50:52.549 W2:17.312. The hill is farmed by Mr. Owen Yeatman of Lowbrook Farm, Belchalwell. The site has an altitude of 800ft (262m) AMSL with a top-to-bottom height of 350ft (115m). The best wind direction for flying is NW (305°), but it can accommodate winds from W to NNW (275° to 340°). Before flying, it is advisable to contact the Wessex HGPGC club members for a site briefing. The site has been used for many years and is maintained to balance free flying, grazing land, and chalk downland conservation. Note that top landing is not permitted since the ownership of the top field changed in 2012. Directions to Bell Hill: - From Sturminster Newton or Blandford, drive into Shillingstone on the A357. - From Blandford, look for the war memorial on your right, then take the next left turn signed for Okeford Fitzpaine. - From Sturminster, this turn will be the first right after entering the village. - Drive to Okeford Fitzpaine, pass the church, and at the ‘Y’ and ‘T’ junction, take the left side of the ‘Y’ and turn left at the ‘T’. - Continue out of Okeford Fitzpaine, pass a left turn to Okeford Hill, and go straight ahead. - Take the next left turn signed for Bulbarrow and Ansty. - Climb uphill, pass a chalk pit on your left, and just before the crest of the hill, you will find a locked gate with a stile leading up across Bell Hill. Access: - Walk up the track to the hill crest or along the fence line to find a suitable launch area. - If driving, drive to the top of the track. The gate is padlocked with a combination lock, details available to members on the Wessex website. Ensure the gate is kept closed at all times. Parking: - If conditions are suitable, park off the track along the fence line. - Alternatively, park on the roadside on the Bulbarrow side of the entrance gate, ensuring not to obstruct the road. - If the roadside is busy, use the chalk pit at the foot of Bell Hill for overflow parking. Hazards: - The biggest hazard is other pilots, especially on busy summer days. - The ridge shallows to the west above the entrance gate, and power lines run down the hill further west. - Turbulence can occur if the wind is off to the north. - Launch in front of the windsock or anywhere south along the ridge, ensuring you are far enough down the hill. XC and Ridge Runs: - Bell Hill is known for its XC potential, with thermals often triggered by the spur east of takeoff, the bowl, and the "Magic Tree." - XC flights to Swanage or north of Bournemouth airspace are possible, but be aware of controlled airspace and danger areas around Lulworth ranges. - Flying southward down the ridge toward Bulbarrow is also possible.
