Ă…re, Tusenmeter berg Areskutan 1
The take-off point is situated directly above the cable car's mountain station. This area is shared by both hang gliders and paragliders and can get quite crowded during spring and winter when many pilots are eager to start. It's also common to have curious onlookers who may comment, ask questions, take photos, and film. Be cautious of peer pressure; only you can decide when you are ready to launch. Remember that children may not have the same awareness of their surroundings as adults.
The wooden ramp, visible only in summer, is suitable for hang gliding. Paragliders take off east of the ramp. During summer, the starting area can be quite challenging due to the short running distance that narrows towards the crest.
Elevation difference to Draklanda: 905m
Elevation difference to Tusenmeter Dal: 260m
Things to consider before starting:
- Maintain a safe distance from the Tusenmetersliften and Kabinbanevajrarna.
- Ensure the running distance is clear of skiers and spectators.
- Reserve landing areas are east of Tusenmeter Dal or next to the trail to Mörvikshummeln.
Landing: The landing zone, called Draklanda, is located between the bottom of the Olympia slope and the lake. Be cautious of the train power lines on the side of the landing zone. Height: 375 m ASL.
Getting there: Fly to Ă…re/Ă–stersund Airport, then take a train for an hour, or fly to Trondheim and catch a train for 3 hours.
Comments: Åre is a fantastic place, especially when the weather is good. The Skysport paragliding school is situated next to the landing field and offers a BBQ area and shop. Always speak to the locals—they are friendly and informative.
Weather hazards: Ă…re is a mountain and must be approached with caution. Lenticular clouds in the sky are a bad sign. The landing can be difficult in NW winds as the location by the lake can act as a thermal trigger.
Flight regulation: 3000 m ASL.

Tourism: Ă…re offers a wide range of activities, from copper mining tours to spa treatments. You can also enjoy whitewater rafting, zip-lining, and world-class mountain biking tracks. It is considered the best ski area in Sweden.
Take-off: Ă…re is primarily known as the largest ski area in Sweden but is also a great spot for both hang gliding and paragliding. There are three maintained launch zones year-round, suitable for beginners from NE to NW. The largest launch zone, called 'the 1000-meter,' is located at 1280 m ASL. XC flying is possible, mainly from April to July. In May 2008, two local pilots flew 240 km from this site. The mountain is easily accessible by tram from January to August, and you can hike up during other months.

Ulebergshamn
Ulebergshamn is a local soaring site occasionally used by paragliders. It is situated between Bovallstrand and Hunnebostrand. To get there, drive south at the Ulebergshamn sign, turn right towards the coast when you reach the highest point, and then turn right again towards the quarry. The launch area is a large plateau along the entire ridge, making it easy for back launches. However, start a bit lower to maintain a margin, as there is a cliff behind the launch area.
Landing is straightforward with a large meadow below the ridge. The ridge itself is approximately 400 meters wide, providing ample space for soaring, especially when the sea breeze comes in.
A Pilot 1 license is required to fly here, and the optimal wind direction is west. The site is known for good lift when conditions are right.

Hammars Backar Ystad
When flying at Hammars Backar, please keep the following in mind to ensure smooth cooperation with hang gliders and other paragliders. The area around the launch site should only be used for takeoff and landing. Avoid flying over the high part west of the launch when it's crowded, especially if there are many wings in the air. Make a few turns to gain altitude and then head east.
Beginners should attach a long red streamer to their equipment for their own safety and that of others. Flying close to each other is common, which can be unsettling for beginners. All parking should be done on the right side of the road when you arrive.
The site is known for good coastal soaring flights. The launch site is a beautiful grassy slope facing southwest. You can drive up to the launch site unless the military is practicing target shooting, in which case the gate will be closed.
Type of flying site: Ridge soaring
License requirement: Student
Wind directions: SW, S
Launch altitude: 50 meters above sea level
Height difference: 50 meters
To get there, head to the coast just east of Ystad. Drive up the gravel road near the gas pump, passing Hammars Hangskola. The flying area is between the large practice field and KĂĄseberga.

Kittelfjäll SE
At an elevation of 920 meters, this site is frequently used and offers excellent soaring conditions with good cross-country potential. There are multiple takeoff options within a 250-meter range.
For flights:
The southeast takeoff is from the top of the lift. From March onwards, you can find good thermals over one of the many ravines. The northeast takeoff is easiest from the top of 'Ă…sen' at 835 meters. The east takeoff at 925 meters is at the top of 'Flygarskalet', about a 20-minute walk south from the top of the lift, with a noted funnel effect. There are large landing areas below the hotel.
The west-southwest takeoff has its own name in the logbook. The southwest and west takeoffs at 910 meters are also from 'Flygarskalet', heading towards Borkasjøen and Norway. Landing is in a small clearing near the road or sea.
This is a very good site that regularly organizes competitions and hosted the Swedish Paragliding Championship in 1999. It offers good distance flying opportunities and is also a very good ski resort. For more information, visit www.kittelfjall.com.
In winter, contact a helicopter pilot (heliskiing) before flying to coordinate landing areas and airways.
