The main takeoff point is at an altitude of 3854 meters, with other possible takeoff points located 150-500 meters further down near the road. This site is regularly used and offers excellent cross-country (XC) flying opportunities, with potential flights up to 250 km one-way. To reach the takeoff point, it takes approximately 2 hours by 4x4 jeep from Booni. The road is generally in good condition and leads to the second highest canal project in the world, although it was blocked by snow at 3600 meters in late May 2007. The road typically opens in June and leads to the top of the ridge at 3850 meters. The takeoff area is undeveloped but large and easy to use, facing South/Southeast, making it a morning site. Toplanding is possible all along the ridge. The nearest town is Booni, where a jeep ride costs around 1500 rupees and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. For landing, there is a large plateau at 2200 meters in the middle of the valley, providing a huge landing area. There are numerous roads on top of the plateau for retrieval. Another landing option is the polo ground in Booni, which is oriented into the prevailing valley wind. The plateau is also used by Peregrine Falcons for breeding. To get there, drive 2 hours north from Chitral to Booni, where you can stay. Booni is still 2 hours south of Mastuj. From Booni, you can see the road leading up to the launch on the opposite side of the valley. This site is considered by some to be the most amazing in the world, with unbelievable potential for XC flying that has not yet been fully explored. However, be aware that the very large mountains create strong conditions, which can be hazardous. There are no airports in the area, so flight regulations are minimal. View spotTake off: From Skardu, head west on the main road for about 10 kilometers until you reach a village called Skardo (name may vary on some maps). Turn south onto a tarmac road leading 1 kilometer up to an Army base. Skirt the base on the right-hand (west) side and follow a rough track for 500 meters. At the fork, take the track on the right leading up the hill and follow it for approximately 5 kilometers. This journey takes about 1 hour by jeep from Skardu. When you reach the irrigated zone of the Chunda valley, stop and walk west up a gentle U-shaped valley, passing a cricket pitch to reach the lip overlooking the Skardu valley. More information: [ParaglidingEarth](http://www.paff.org.uk) Getting there: Skardu is about 24 hours by bus from Islamabad or a 1-hour flight, costing around 9000 rupees for foreigners. Comments: The site faces northeast but benefits from plenty of anabatic flow during the afternoon. Weather hazards: Be cautious of strong valley winds after 4 PM. Flight regulation: This site overlooks the airport and the military base. You should contact both before flying. The control tower is generally fine with afternoon flights since there is usually only one flight in the morning. The military may request that you do not take photographs but are generally not very concerned. Website: [PAFF](http://www.paff.org.uk)
View spotTakeoff: The takeoff point is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour walk from the starting location. Begin at the quarry area, which is 1 km north of Shigar on the Askole road. From the quarry, climb the steep, loose slopes and turn south to follow a path that contours the slope upwards. Alternatively, you can take a steeper path directly through the cliffs, which is easier than it appears, and then walk south on the plateau above. This route may take around 2.5 hours. A good takeoff spot facing south, with some cleared ground, can be reached after about 1.5 to 2 hours. You can take off there or on the talus slope above. Note that the valley breeze was from the northwest on one occasion, which was unexpected but manageable. Although the takeoff faces south, it typically starts working around 12 pm. There might be another takeoff site on the southeast face that works earlier. Landing: There are plenty of safe landing options in the very wide valley. Getting There: Take a taxi from Skardu to 1 km north of Shigar. The journey costs about 500 rupees and takes approximately 50 minutes. Comments: This site may be close to the one used by Julien Wirtz and Phillipe Nodet for their epic flight over Trango Towers and halfway up to Concordia before landing at Arandu in 2007. Weather Hazards: The Skardu valley can get quite windy (40 kph+) after 4 pm. A strong and regular south wind from the Deosai plains meets the west valley wind of the main Skardu valley. Wind characteristics near Shigar are not well-documented.
