Qammieh Bay Red Tower

Located in Mellieha, Malta, this paragliding site offers a unique flying experience. The take-off area is a small clearing by the side of the road, providing a limited space for launching. However, once airborne, pilots can enjoy smooth soaring conditions, especially in southerly winds. The site has a height of 103 meters and a length of 2200 meters, making it suitable for medium-level flights. The site record is 2.3 km. Landing options include returning to the take-off area or bottom landing in the fields below. To get there, follow signs to Mellieha, then continue towards Gozo. After passing Ghadira Bay on your right, continue uphill, take a sharp left turn, and proceed on this road. Park your car in a small clearing nearby, which is also the take-off area. In good conditions, significant altitude gains can be achieved along these cliffs. However, be cautious of rotor behind the cliff, and note that top landing should be done to the left of the take-off area. Visiting pilots are advised to contact a local pilot before flying and notify the control tower before and after their flight. Alternatively, on the other side of the Castle at Selmun Bay, the take-off spot is just a dozen meters above the sea with a limited beach below. This north-facing site offers a unique experience: once airborne, you can climb a nearby slope and soar high over the cliffs behind the bay. Ghargur Top of the World

Gharghur, Malta Elevation: 111 meters Horizontal Distance: 80 meters This site is regularly used for paragliding, offering opportunities for soaring and some cross-country (XC) flights. Top landing is possible. It is considered one of the better spots on Malta. From the parking area, walk southwest along the ridge for around 100 meters. The take-off is located on top of a rocky hill just before the farming terraces. There are some carpets set up to avoid line breakage, but the take-off area is otherwise rocky. Winds: At times, the island experiences NNW-NW winds. In such conditions, Gharghur is an excellent choice. The breeze from the sea combines with the heat from the fields below, generating excellent thermic and thermodynamic lift. If the prevailing westerly wind is too much from the north for Ghajn Tuffieha, Gharghur is a great alternative. Region: Gharghur, Malta Site Record: 10.1 km Take-off: Situated on top of a rocky hill. Landing: Either top landing adjacent to the take-off or landing on fields below. Always avoid landing in cultivated fields. Getting There: Go to Gharghur and follow signs to Victoria Lines. A narrow road leads to the take-off, which is situated to the left of the car park. Comments: Soaring and easy thermaling can be done at this site. Flight Regulation: Visiting pilots need to contact a local pilot before flying. The control tower must be notified before and after flying.
