The Top 20 Paragliding sites in Jordan:

Al Beidah 1700 top Petra

Altitude: 1648 meters, Height Difference: approximately 540 meters. This site is occasionally used and suitable for soaring flights. Takeoff: You can take off from any place on the top of the hill that isn't too rocky. Just find a suitable spot and you're good to go. Landing: Landing is easy on top of the hill. You can also land down in the valley or close to the road halfway down, which makes the walk back up shorter. Getting There: From Wadi Musa, take the road to 'Little Petra'. You'll pass through a village where Bedouins have settled. Continue north for a few kilometers until you reach a wide valley. The flyable area is on the mountain to your left, facing west. A road climbs up this mountain. Follow it to the top, then take a right at the crossroad (heading south). A rough track (4x4 recommended) will take you to the summit. If you prefer a short hike, you can park halfway up the hill after the turns when the road straightens out and climb to the summit on foot (20 to 30 minutes). Comments: This is a very pleasant site with a red rocky lunar landscape. It's a pleasure to fly here. It seems possible to fly from the road to Wadi Rum, a bit south of Wadi Musa, although this hasn't been tried. Weather Hazards: There are no specific hazards noted, but as always, be cautious. Breeze can get strong in the spring and summer afternoons, so it's best to come early or try evening soaring. Tourism: Petra is one of the most incredible places to visit. Plan to spend at least a couple of days exploring. Finding a hotel won't be difficult, but choosing one might be. Website: [Link](http://perso.wanadoo.fr/rafontheweb/petra/...)

Landing: Land down the dune. Getting There: On the road to Rum reserve, take a right turn to Disi. Cross the village of Disi and continue on the road for about 12 km. You will see irrigated fields on your left. Cross a village where the road turns left. At the exit of this village, the dune is on your right, just next to the road. Comments: This spot is more of an excellent school/wagas slope than a true flying site. However, with good wind conditions, it is possible to rise and do some soaring on the mountain. Once airborne, you will have an amazing view of the desert and the typical round irrigated fields. Tourism: Spend more than a couple of hours in the desert, sleep in the sand, and watch the stars.

Wadi Rum Burdha Arch

Located at an altitude of approximately 1341 meters with a height difference of around 265 meters, this paragliding site is known for its challenging conditions and is recommended for expert pilots only. The site is ideal for soaring in the morning breeze, wing handling, and showcasing advanced skills. Note that flying is typically only possible in the morning. Takeoff is short and sharp, situated above the famous Burdah Arch. To reach the takeoff point, you need to pass the arch and continue climbing for about 50 meters. This climb includes a difficult move that may require a 10-meter piece of rope to assist in climbing without the bag first, then bringing the glider up with the rope. For more information, you can visit ParaglidingEarth. The landing area is vast and sandy, often described as the biggest landing zone in the world. To get there, any Wadi Rum Bedouin guide can take you to the Burdah Arch in a 4x4 vehicle, as it is a bit far from the village of Rum. Make sure to insist that the guide walks up with you to the arch, as the path is not straightforward, although it remains an easy walk. If you mention that you plan to fly from there, the guide might join you out of curiosity. The site is east-oriented, making it suitable for takeoff thanks to the morning breeze. However, if you arrive too late in the morning, the breeze might shift to the west, making it crucial to plan for an early flight on a calm day. While in Wadi Rum, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Spend a few days exploring, drinking tea, and sleeping under the stars. You'll find it to be a memorable experience.

Wadi Mujib West

Take off: The GPS coordinates provided are approximate. Please find the most suitable launch site nearby and update us with the exact location. Landing: Look for a suitable landing spot down the valley and provide the precise coordinates. Getting there: When you arrive in Wadi Musa, turn left towards the village. Comments: I haven't flown at this site, so the information is limited. Some pilots mentioned they have flown here, and it looks promising based on Google Earth. If you get the chance to fly here, please share your feedback. There is a road that goes down the wadi, so driving to the landing zone and back up should be manageable.

Wadi Bin Hammad

Altitude: 949 meters, Height Difference: 190 meters No flight logs found. Top landing is easy. Takeoff: The takeoff area is large and flat, with no significant issues except for some rocks on the ground. Be cautious of the electrical wires running close to the takeoff area. Landing: Top landing is very easy and recommended. Alternatively, you can land on the road below without much difficulty. Getting There: Travel about 10 km north of Kerak on the King's Highway. Take a road to the west at GPS coordinates 31.226601 N, 35.738461 E. After approximately 500 meters, turn right at the next road (GPS coordinates: 31.227115 N, 35.727282 E). Follow this road until you reach the takeoff waypoint. Comments: Enjoy nice soaring in the valley breeze, with some thermal assistance. You can explore the wider local area around the valley, but be prepared to walk if you land unexpectedly. Weather Hazards: Always monitor the weather conditions, which can become challenging in this region. Other than that, there are no special hazards. Tourism: Wadi bin Hammad, located down the road, offers an excellent family walk with feet in the water and plenty of lush vegetation, especially in April.

Dana

Located at an altitude of 1535 meters with a height difference of approximately 230 meters, this site is known for its excellent soaring ridge and good thermals, making it one of the top paragliding locations in Jordan. Takeoff is straightforward and easily identifiable next to the given GPS point. The area offers ample space and a perfect slope, although it may feel a bit short or flat if the wind isn't strong. Top landing is extremely easy, often compared to the simplicity of enjoying tea offered by Bedouins. If top landing isn't possible due to low wind, you can land just before the village. Look for two small buildings next to the road; there's a clean, flat but small area to land. Be cautious, as landing at Dana village can be tricky with strong valley breezes, potentially causing rotors. In such conditions, top landing should still be feasible. To get there, head to Dana Wildlife Reserve, which is well-documented in any guide. It's located 20 km south of Tafila on Kings Road. Ignore the road signs to Dana Reserve while driving south from Tafila and continue until you see a large cemetery on your left. This site offers excellent soaring and thermal conditions with breathtaking views, making it a must-visit for paragliding enthusiasts in Jordan. Weather hazards include potential rotors when landing at Dana village and strong winds in the narrow valley, which should be avoided. For accommodation, the 'Tower Hotel' in Dana village is a charming, typical, and affordable option, ideal for backpackers.

Mount Nebo

Take off from the hill just south of the church of the real Mount Nebo. There's a track leading to the left just 100 meters after the church's tourist parking lots. Walk along this track and find any suitable place to take off. The launch is oriented NNW, and there might be a possibility to launch somewhere W oriented, offering views of the Dead Sea. Top landing is rather easy. Landing down has not been tried, but at first sight, it seems very possible without major problems. From Amman, take the highway to Madaba, then follow the signs to Mount Nebo, a very touristic place that you can't miss. Enjoy a wonderful view of the Dead Sea and nice breeze soaring/thermals flight. Note that this may be a sensitive place since the Israel border is in the valley just in front. Try to obtain permission from the Royal AeroSports Club of Jordan. There are no particular weather hazards; it's a basic thermals site. This site is in the Dead Sea valley, with Israel just in front. The police or army may be surprised to see you fly if you haven't warned them. Contact the Royal AeroSports Club of Jordan (RASCJ) in Aqaba to ask for a flying authorization: [Royal AeroSports Club of Jordan](http://www.royalaeroclub.com/). Madaba is nice to visit. Most of all, don't miss floating on the Dead Sea just below the site.

Kerak

The take-off site is at an altitude of 1033 meters with a height difference of approximately 400 meters. This location appears suitable for thermal soaring, especially in relatively light winds. Be cautious of potential turbulence from the opposite ridge in stronger winds. This site is situated about 5 kilometers west of Kerak. There might also be a north-facing flying site on the other side of the valley (wadi). While you're in the area, consider visiting the castle of Kerak, which is a notable tourist attraction. Wadi Mujib East face

Takeoff: The takeoff is straightforward and easy, making it suitable for pilots of various skill levels. Landing: You can land on top without any issues. Landing in the valley is also manageable. Getting There: The site is located approximately 1.5 kilometers east of the road. To reach it, leave the road near the Trajan Hotel and head east through the fields. You should be able to find tracks leading to the site. Comments: In November, the site often experiences east winds throughout the day, making it flyable even in the morning. It's a pleasant and uncomplicated location for paragliding. Weather Hazards: Be cautious as the east wind can intensify around sunset.

Wadi Hasa

Take off: The take-off point is at an altitude of 1229 meters with a height difference of approximately 230 meters. Going there: You can reach the site by traveling on Kings Road, between Dana and Petra. Comments: Although I didn't get the chance to fly here because I arrived too late at night, it seems like a promising spot, especially with a south wind. I initially heard about this location from a French magazine and a French paragliding school website, although I can't find the website anymore. People to contact: For flying authorization, you should contact the 'Royal AeroSports Club of Jordan' (RASCJ) in Aqaba. Their website is http://www.royalaeroclub.com

Wadi Mujib South face

Altitude: 718 meters. The site is considered medium-easy. Flight Log: Only one flight log found, indicating it as a good soaring site for south wind. Top landing is recommended. Takeoff: Coming from the north (Amman), the takeoff point is on your left just before the road descends into the Wadi, approximately 200 meters before the viewpoint parking. The takeoff area is a flat, clean field. When the breeze is present, you should find good orientation here. Landing: The best option is to land on top, which is easy if you have sufficient altitude. If you need to land at the bottom, there is a small, technical landing spot near a track 200 meters down from the viewpoint. It is advisable to check this area before flying to ensure it is suitable for you. Alternatively, you can explore the area down in the Wadi to the east, near the dam, to find a suitable landing spot close to the road. Directions: From the north (Amman) on the Kings Road, the site is located where the road reaches Wadi Mujib. Comments: The landscape is very impressive, making the flight worthwhile for the views alone. The thermal breeze is oriented west in the Wadi, so you should find some lift along the road to the viewpoint parking. Landing possibilities can be challenging if not landing on top, but this was not an issue for us as we landed on top. Tourism: Trekking and canyoning can be done down in the Wadi, which has lots of water. The Trajan Hotel, located on the south edge of the Wadi (Karak side), is a good place to stay for a night (as of October 2006).

Mukawir

Mukawir offers a paragliding experience with an elevation of approximately 471 meters and a horizontal distance of 870 meters. The takeoff area is versatile with several possible spots near the track, all of which are very good and clean for launching. For landing, top landing is easy. If you descend, follow the track, and it should be possible to land near the Dead Sea, which is at an elevation of -399 meters. Mukawir is situated on a hilltop southwest of Madaba. To get there, find the road that goes down and under the archaeological site. This road transitions into a track that leads down to the Dead Sea. Follow this track for less than a kilometer to reach the site. The site offers a stunning view of the Dead Sea. However, understanding the wind behavior can be challenging at times. In addition to paragliding, you can explore the nearby archaeological site and enjoy the fantastic views.

King Talal Dam

Elevation is approximately 372 meters with a height difference of around 190 meters. This site is considered medium in difficulty. Takeoff: After parking your car, continue on foot for about 100 meters along the dirt track. You can take off from the track once you find the best wind-oriented spot on the hill. Landing: It is possible to land back at the takeoff point on the track. Alternatively, landing close to the water is also an option. Getting There: The site can be challenging to find. On the highway from Amman to Jerash, about halfway to Jerash, you will descend into a valley. At the lowest point, where the highway crosses a small river, leave the highway. Go underneath the highway to the west, along the river, and then ascend the hill on your right. Once at the top, take the road on your left and continue for about 500 meters until you find yourself above the lake. Comments: This is a very pleasant soaring site, especially in the thermal breeze. Pilots have flown here in the summer until dusk. Weather Hazards: The breeze can be strong in the afternoons during spring and summer. Tourism: Jerash is approximately 25-30 kilometers away and is a remarkable site to visit. Check tourist guides for more information. A recommended itinerary in spring is to visit Jerash early in the morning, leave the ruins when the winds weaken, and spend the late afternoon flying in the breeze at King Talal Dam.

Wadi Mujib North face

Takeoff is located just west of the Trajan Hotel. Be aware that the wind may come from your left due to the valley breeze being westerly. Landing is straightforward and comfortable, situated slightly above the track. You will need to walk back to the track, but the area is not too rocky, making for an easy landing. To get there, follow the road south out of the Wadi towards Kerak. The Trajan Hotel will be on your right. This flight may be less interesting compared to flying on the other side of the Wadi, but it offers the advantage of a comfortable landing. Weather hazards include sideway wind.

Beidah North-West Petra

Takeoff is located at an altitude of 1399 meters with a height difference of approximately 305 meters. The takeoff area is a clean field, divided by a large rock into two sectors: one facing west and the other northwest. Landing is in a large, clean field below the takeoff area. However, be cautious of the electrical lines situated beyond the landing field. To get there, take the road heading straight up from the east exit of Beida village towards the Amman/Shawbak road. After a couple of kilometers, just 50 meters before the road makes a sharp left turn, take a track for another couple of kilometers. The track starts with about 200 meters of cement and then turns to dust. The takeoff area will be on your right. This site is very easy to use for both takeoff and landing, making it suitable for initiation flights. It can be particularly useful with light north winds when other takeoff points in the Beida bowl are experiencing crosswinds. The drive up is relatively short and the track is not too difficult to navigate.

View spot

Al Beidah Petra

Take off: The take-off area is the cleanest in Jordan, featuring a nearly flat surface with rocks and small bushes. It is well-positioned for thermal and breeze activity. If the wind is strong at the 'West take off,' this spot might be preferable as it is slightly lower in elevation. Landing: There are multiple landing options available. We landed near the road that heads north to Wadi Araba. Be cautious of the 'Venturi' effect caused by the hills to the west, which can alter the wind direction at landing, making it come more from the north compared to the launch site. Getting there: From Little Petra (Beida), follow the road to the pass, then take a left onto a relatively clean track. After approximately 200 meters, the take-off area will be on your left. Comments: This site offers a very comfortable experience for both take-off and landing, and the view is spectacular. Weather hazards: Be aware of strong breezes. For more information, visit: http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/83276 http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/83360 http://www.paraglidingforum.com/leonardo/flight/83156

Al Beidah 1400 Petra

Altitude approximately 1440 meters, height difference approximately 320 meters. The site is suitable for medium-easy soaring. There is one flight log available on ParaglidingEarth, indicating short flights are common. Alternatively, you can also start behind the needle curve east from here. Takeoff: Located just next to the road that crosses Beida village and goes east to the pass. Landing: There are many places to land, including a good flat field next to the road before the village entrance. Getting there: From Wadi Moussa, head towards Little Petra (10 km north of Wadi Moussa) and turn right (instead of left to Little Petra) to cross Beida village. The takeoff will be on your left after a small climb and some turns. Comments: This takeoff has three advantages compared to the top of the mountain: - Easy to drive to: no bad trail. - Wind protection: While the summit can expose you to strong winds due to acceleration, this lower takeoff may offer more protection. - Good and clean place to lay your wing. However, if the conditions are not favorable, you may only achieve a very short flight. Weather hazards: Be cautious of strong breezes. If the wind strengthens during the day, it can become too strong to handle safely.
