View spotThe Abtsrodaer Kuppe launch site, located in Hesse, Germany, is a popular spot for paragliding enthusiasts. With an elevation of 910 meters and a height difference of 188 meters, it offers excellent soaring conditions and the potential for cross-country flights. Top landing is straightforward, making it a favored location for many pilots. This site is particularly well-suited for soaring and cross-country flying, especially in northeast wind conditions, which can lead to strong thermal developments. The launch area is next to a tree with a windsock, and it is one of the main flying sites on the Wasserkuppe. The terrain has been used for aviation since the early 20th century and is considered one of the most beautiful training slopes in Germany. It is ideal for ground handling and soaring. However, pilots must adhere to specific rules, such as respecting model aircraft and trainee pilots, and being mindful of the glider and motor flight operations at Wasserkuppe. A launch director is usually present on-site. For more information, you can contact the Wasserkuppe Flight Center at 06654 / 7548 or visit [Wasserkuppe](http://www.wasserkuppe.com). The launch site is managed by the 1st Drachenflugclub Wasserkuppe, with services provided in cooperation with RDG e.V. Pilots must fly only in the designated blue-marked area after launch and avoid overflying the red-marked airspace reserved for model aircraft. Landing should be done on the main landing field, and ground handling is allowed only in the green-marked area. For any assistance, you can contact the launch director or the shuttle service at 0173/6551646. Parking is free at the Papillon Flight Center or on the public parking lots of Wasserkuppe. With a club membership card, access to the Abtsrodaer Kuppe parking lot is also available. After launching, pilots should head towards the landing area or catch thermals to the right. Communication is done via PMR Channel 1.1 once 100 meters above the launch site. For more details, visit [RDG e.V.](https://rdg-ev.de/abtsrodaer-kuppe-n-no/). Note that mixed flight operations with model aircraft occur at this site, and the area is divided to ensure smooth operations. Delta and paraglider pilots should use the landing field at the foot of Wasserkuppe towards Dietges. A shuttle service is available on weekends from April to October. Avoid flying at dusk and be cautious of the power line between the launch and landing sites. In case of strong northeast winds, consider flying at Kreuzberg in the Bavarian Rhön, which offers better conditions with less traffic. Parking is available on the public lots at Wasserkuppe, and a permit can be obtained from the gliding school for parking directly at the launch site. View spotThe Wasserkuppe South Slopes in Germany offer a versatile paragliding experience, particularly suitable for strong wind training and ground handling. The site features a height difference of 40 to 160 meters, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced pilots. The launch area is slightly lower, and there are limited cross-country opportunities. This site is frequently used and logged under 'Westhang' on Leonardo. The entire area is launchable, and soaring is possible depending on the number of pilots present, though it can get crowded. The upper slope area is well-suited for launching and landing. Landings are typically made near the mountain and valley stations towards Obernhausen. Due to the strong wind conditions, flights are only permitted with a flight director present. A webcam on the roof of the flight school provides hourly updated images, which can be found on the Papillon Rhöner Drachen- und Gleitschirmflugschule website. There is a start fee of 5.00 EUR. For weather updates, you can call the weather phone at +49 (0)6654/696 or check the Meteomedia weather station Wasserkuppe (station 105440). The Papillon Rhöner Drachen- und Gleitschirmflugschule Wasserkuppe offers detailed information and services for pilots. During non-training times, club and guest pilots can fly with a flight director at the Baude (South slope in front of the dome). Training is exclusively conducted at the Weltenseglerhang and the Southwest step, where only flights towards Obernhausen are allowed. Soaring is prohibited near the model flight launch area. Pilots must ensure that pedestrians use the designated paths and avoid walking across the flight field. Kites are also not allowed in the flight area due to safety concerns. In case of mixed flight operations with the flight school, the slope is divided, and training operations must not be crossed. Training usually occurs in lighter wind conditions, making mixed operations rare. Adherence to avoidance rules is mandatory. During the glider club's towing operations at the foot of the slope, flights are restricted to the path marked in red on the map. Non-compliance with this rule poses a severe risk to all pilots. Landings after flights towards Obernhausen are typically made near the mountain or valley station of the Zuckerfeld lift. The upper slope area at the Baude is generally used for strong wind training, launching, flying, and landing. The South slope is mainly utilized during prefrontal weather conditions, with increasing wind as air mass boundaries approach. Sudden wind gusts can occur at any time, even during non-thermal early morning and evening hours. The highest cloud base recorded here was 3200m NN in March 1996. A significant hazard during reverse flights is the fencing around the technical installations at the summit. Due to high flight traffic, the South slopes in Reichenhausen, Kaltennordheim, and Geba are also recommended on weekends. Parking is available at the public parking areas around the Rhön-Info Center on the Wasserkuppe, and the launch sites are accessible on foot. Utilize the extensive facilities available on the Kuppe. Flight directors from the club or flight schools can be found at the Hotel Peterchens Mondfahrt. View spotThe paragliding site at Eitorf Honscheid in Germany is a medium-difficulty location with a height difference of 125 meters. It is regularly used for soaring and occasionally for cross-country flights. The site has a record flight distance of 18.3 km. Region: Eitorf Honscheid, Germany Key Details: - Nearest town: Bülgenauel - Take-off altitude: 210 meters above sea level - Landing altitude: 80 meters - Elevation difference: 130 meters - Take-off direction: Southwest to Southeast - Airspace restriction: 2500 feet MSL - Paragliding license required: B-License - Hang gliding license required: A-License Important Notice from Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH NL/Köln-Bonn: The height restriction of 2500 feet MSL must be adhered to. The flying area is near the control zone (airspace D) and below the departure route of runway 140 of Cologne/Bonn Airport. Airspace C begins at 2500 feet MSL. Visual flight minimum conditions for airspaces G and E must also be observed. Take-off: The main wind direction for both hang gliders and paragliders is south. It is also possible to fly with light southeast to southwest winds, but be cautious of rotor turbulence caused by trees. The take-off is from a naturally elevated ramp next to the parking area. Paragliders should be proficient in reverse launching. Landing: The landing area is a large meadow with a windsock directly below the take-off site, across the Sieg river, bordered by surrounding field paths. West winds can cause turbulence due to a nearby dam. Access to the take-off site is either by car via Merten or on foot along the railway track over the Sieg bridge. After the bridge, turn left onto a field path towards Stachelhardt. A small forest path leads steeply up to the take-off site, taking about 45 minutes on foot. Flight: At Stachelhardt, soaring along the ridge is common in strong winds. With sufficient altitude gain at take-off, cross-country flights towards the northwest are possible. However, be cautious of airspace restrictions due to the proximity of Cologne/Bonn Airport at 2500 feet MSL. Difficulties and Dangers: This site is not suitable for beginner paragliders. The take-off is recommended only for experienced pilots. Be aware of rotor turbulence in crosswinds. For more information, visit: - [Delta Club Stachelhardt](https://www.delta-club.de/pages/fluggebiet/gelaende---stachelhardt.php) - [Flugschule Oberberg](http://www.flugschule-oberberg.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6&Itemid=7) More details can be found on the [Eitorf Paragliding Page](http://mitglied.lycos.de/flugberge/index_d/eitorf.htm).
View spotThe launch site at Hohe Geba in Germany, with an elevation of 551 meters and a height difference of approximately 130 meters, is regularly used for paragliding. It offers some opportunities for soaring and thermal flying, with occasional possibilities for cross-country flights. Before flying, it's advisable to consult with local pilots regarding landing spots. For more information on specific flights, you can check the following links: [Flight 1](http://xc.dhv.de/xc/modules/leonardo/index.php?name=leonardo&op=show_flight&flightID=320825) [Flight 2](http://xc.dhv.de/xc/modules/leonardo/index.php?name=leonardo&op=show_flight&flightID=303616) To reach the site, drive from Herpf towards Bettenhausen, then Helmershausen, and continue towards Geba. Park before the sharp left turn at the sign for the site. Access is via a field path uphill, which takes about 10 minutes. Note that driving up is only allowed for club members. A day membership fee of €5 can be paid at Träbeser Bauernstübchen. For takeoff, you can either start in the lift band (if available) or directly in the thermals in front of the slope edge. Thermals often break off below the edge, allowing you to gain altitude near the slope. Flights along the Geba are often possible when gaining altitude. Landing is usually done at the top, but only for experienced pilots. Otherwise, land at the foot of the slope on the meadow. The main landing area is a large meadow along the connecting road between Bettenhausen and Helmershausen. Do not walk up the slope; use the hiking trail instead, as it is a nature reserve/biosphere reserve. Be cautious of the wind direction, which should always be facing the slope. Turbulence can occur with slight deviations and wind speeds over 25 km/h due to the hill in the southwest. Not paying the day membership fee can also lead to issues. Rules: - Right of way applies on the slope. - Be considerate and avoid top landing if pilots are in the start window. - Club members have the authority to give instructions. - Request a site briefing before your first flight. - Park considerately to allow space for others. - Do not litter. For more details, visit [Gebaflieger](http://www.gebaflieger.de/). The southwest launch site above Helmershausen at the southwestern foot of Hohe Geba offers excellent thermal potential. However, the mountain is rarely suitable for soaring, but good thermals often provide fantastic flying experiences. The attractive slope terrain of Gebaflieger e.V. is ideal with wind from the southwest. The site is located on the slopes of Geba in a nature reserve. Access is via the road between Helmershausen and Geba (Flattigsweg). Never drive over the meadows (nature conservation). Visiting pilots should register at the mountain inn Neidhardskopf and pay the start fee.
