Puengasi
Located in the Pichincha region of Ecuador, the paragliding site near Quito offers a thrilling experience with an altitude of 3142 meters. This site is regularly used and allows for some cross-country (XC) flying. Top landing is also possible.
Take-off is conveniently accessible by car, bus, or taxi along the road. The take-off area is oriented to the east and is situated in the sector known as 'The Forest' along 'Via Oriental'. The exact GPS coordinates for the take-off location are S00 16 11.3 W078 30 27.7. The site is southeast of Quito, near Nueva Via Oriental, Loma de Puengasí, in the Barrio La Forestal, next to the Mirador Bellavista.
The access road is fully paved, making it easy to reach by normal car, taxi, or bus. The take-off altitude is 3000 meters above sea level. Be cautious of obstacles such as fencing at the lower part of the take-off area and trees to the right.
The site is suitable for intermediate and advanced pilots during the summer months (July, August, September) in the early morning hours (8:00 to 9:00 AM). In winter, beginner pilots can fly in the morning, while more experienced pilots (levels 2 and 3) can fly from 11:00 AM onwards. The best flying conditions are from October to June.
For more details, visit [Aeropasion](http://www.aeropasion.net/cvle/content/iframe/l_puengasi2.htm).
From the take-off, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the southern outskirts of Quito. With a few meters of altitude gain, you can overlook the entire capital. The landing field is spacious, and you can navigate using the high cables on three sides and the trees in the approach path. Note that the broad valley is also an approach path for Quito's airport, so be mindful of air traffic and be prepared to spiral down if necessary.
The site has a vertical drop of 260 meters, and upon landing, you might find local kids eager to help pack up your gear for a small tip. The take-off area doubles as a viewpoint and a popular excursion spot, where you can enjoy local treats like fried bananas, corn on the cob, and roast pork.

Pichincha-Quito
Thermal soaring in the Andes, specifically in the Pichincha region of Ecuador, offers a unique paragliding experience. The site is occasionally used, with some potential for cross-country (XC) flights. The takeoff point is at an altitude of 3800 meters above sea level and provides a stunning view of the city. It can accommodate 6-10 gliders simultaneously. However, caution is advised due to single transmitting antennas, and it's best to take off when the wind is from the east or north.
Landing is available three kilometers east of the takeoff point in the Altamira district.
To access the site, permission is required. The area is often used for city school graduations and festivals, particularly during the celebrations of Quito on December 5th. During these events, pilots can fly over the city and land in La Carolina Park, coordinated by the Centro de Vuelo Libre (CVL).
Weather hazards include powerful clouds and strong winds near noon, so flying with a local pilot is recommended. All pilots must adhere to the regulations set by the Ecuadorian Federation of Flight, and due to the technical nature of the flight, prudence is advised.
For more information, you can contact Ricardo Villacís H. at cvl_ecuador@yahoo.com or call 094699586. Additional details can be found on the following websites:

Puengasí Hill, located 20 minutes from the northern commercial area of Quito, is a popular spot for local pilots. The site offers dynamic soaring conditions, with small but powerful thermals. However, the proximity to the city means fewer landing options due to urban growth, restricting flights for novices and hang gliders.
The takeoff point, Mirador, is at an altitude of 3100 meters and is oriented east. Experienced pilots can attempt top landings, but caution is needed due to public presence. Depending on the season, flights can start as early as 10:00 AM, though in summer months, winds can exceed 30 km/h, making afternoon flights preferable.
Landing options include Humilladero and Los Negritos. Humilladero is at an altitude of 2897 meters, while Los Negritos, at 2600 meters, is located next to the highway leading to Valle de los Chillos. The latter offers ample space for landing, with the only obstacle being a metal house structure.
Access to Puengasí Hill is via Avenida Simon Bolivar on the eastern side of Quito. The takeoff is near Mirador Bellavista, and the road is well-maintained, with bus access available from any part of the city.
Pilots should be aware of high-tension cables and towers near the landing zones. It's crucial to identify landing spots before takeoff to avoid these hazards.
For cross-country flights, Machachi is a potential destination 25 km south of the takeoff. Pilots can follow the ridge line for about 12 km before entering a new valley. Suitable conditions may allow for thermal activity near Atacazo Mountain, but if conditions are unfavorable, pilots may end up in Tambillo, a village at the mountain's base.
